Library History and Construction Timeline

1794: An organizational meeting is held with the goal of forming a library in the Town of Middlebury.

1877: Proprietors (shareholders) are permitted to borrow one book a month from the library, a jump up from the previous policy of one book for every two months.

1896: Proprietors, supported by the Town of Middlebury, change the library’s status from a private library to a public library.

1929: The library’s collection is comprised of 900 books and the yearly circulation figure is 537 transactions.

1935: The Middlebury Town Hall is burned, but the library is saved and moved to the old Center School.

1972: The current Middlebury Public Library is built, located on 11.7 acres.

1982: Expansion #1 is constructed to meet the population demands.

1996: Expansion #2 is constructed to meet the population growth. The usable floor space is increased to 15,000 feet.

2006 – 2012: Renovation Proposal based on a Long Range Strategic Plan.
Funding:  State Construction Grant:  $500,000, generous public donations, and town funds. 

September 2012: Library project goes out to bid.

October 2012: Bids are received and the job is awarded for the next planned expansion.

December 18th 2012: Residents of Middlebury vote to approve a plan to expand the Middlebury Public Library. 

January 3rd 2013: Moving company arrives and begins the process of re-locating the library’s collection and belongings to its temporary location at the Middlebury Timex Building.

January 22nd 2013:  The Middlebury Public Library opens to the public at its temporary location, the Middlebury Timex Building (199 Park Road Extension Suite D, Middlebury, CT 06762)
